AI Data Center Optics

How AI training and inference clusters change optical networking: 400G and 800G links, leaf-spine and rail-optimized fabrics, link budgets and fiber choices.

Start here

GPU clusters push far more east-west traffic than a classic enterprise data center, so the optical layer is sized differently. Most new AI fabrics run 400G or 800G between leaf and spine, use parallel single-mode optics such as DR4 and DR8 over MPO cabling, and keep every link inside a tight loss budget.

These articles explain the architecture choices first, then the numbers: reach, loss, fiber type and cost per port. If you are planning a build, start with the first two and use the link-budget guide before you fix cable lengths.
