How to Order MPO Trunks: A 9-Point Procurement Checklist

MPO trunk procurement guide for data center deployments

Most MPO trunk reorder cycles happen because the first order specified one or two key parameters incorrectly. Length, polarity, fiber type, and connector gender are the obvious ones — but the full spec sheet has nine fields, and missing any of them means a 2-4 week reorder. This guide is the checklist we hand to procurement teams before they sign an MPO trunk PO.

⚡ TL;DR — The 9 fields in every MPO trunk order

  • 1. Fiber count (12, 16, 24, 32)
  • 2. Fiber type (OS2 SMF / OM3 / OM4 / OM5)
  • 3. Length (precise to 0.5 m for runs under 10 m)
  • 4. Polarity (Type A / B / C)
  • 5. Connector gender at end A (male pin / female no-pin)
  • 6. Connector gender at end B (male / female)
  • 7. Connector type (standard MPO / MTP®)
  • 8. Polish (UPC / APC — must be APC for OS2)
  • 9. Jacket rating (LSZH / OFNP plenum / OFNR riser / outdoor)

Going through the 9 fields, one at a time

1. Fiber count: 12, 16, 24, or 32

Drive this from the optic that will use the trunk:

  • 12-fiber MPO: 40G-SR4, 100G-SR4, 100G-PSM4, 400G-DR4, 400G-SR4.2, 800G-2×DR4 (uses 2× MPO-12)
  • 16-fiber MPO: 800G-DR8, 800G-SR8, 800G-VR8
  • 24-fiber MPO: Higher density backbones; 12-fiber + 12-fiber stacked deployments
  • 32-fiber MPO: Emerging in 1.6T roadmap, used in some hyperscaler designs today

2. Fiber type

  • OS2 single-mode (SMF): 9/125 µm. Required for all single-mode optics: DR4, DR8, FR4, FR8, LR4, LR8, ZR. Reach up to 80 km depending on optic.
  • OM3 multi-mode: 50/125 µm laser-optimized. Reach: 70 m at 10G, 100 m at 40G/100G. Largely replaced by OM4.
  • OM4 multi-mode: 50/125 µm enhanced bandwidth. Reach: 150 m at 10G, 100 m at 40G/100G, 50 m at 800G-SR8.
  • OM5 multi-mode: Wideband 50/125 µm. Same reach as OM4 for SWDM applications. Currently a niche choice.

3. Length

Measure the actual cable run with service loops included. Common stock lengths: 1 m, 2 m, 3 m, 5 m, 7 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m, 30 m, 50 m, 75 m, 100 m. Custom lengths (e.g. 3.5 m, 6.5 m) are quoted and ship in 1-2 weeks.

4. Polarity

See our polarity guide for the full breakdown. Default: Type B for all modern parallel-optic data center fabrics. Type A only if matching legacy infrastructure with cassettes.

5 & 6. Connector gender (per end)

MPO connectors come in male (with two alignment pins) and female (no pins, accepts male). The mating rule: male mates only with female. A male-male or female-female pair will not connect.

  • For trunk-to-trunk (cascaded trunks): one end female, one end male, with an adapter or cassette in the middle.
  • For trunk-to-transceiver: most transceivers are female sockets, so the trunk connector facing the transceiver should be male.
  • For cassette deployments: trunk connectors are typically female (mating to male cassette ports inside the patch panel).

Always specify gender per end, not just “male trunk.” A 5 m trunk might be female on end A and male on end B.

7. Connector type: standard MPO vs MTP®

  • Standard MPO: Generic multi-fiber connector. Adequate for most enterprise and short-reach deployments. Lower cost.
  • MTP®: US Conec’s premium MPO variant. Tighter ferrule tolerances, lower insertion loss (≤ 0.35 dB Elite), field-repairable pins, better long-term reliability. Required for premium hyperscale and AI data center installations.

MPO and MTP are mechanically compatible — you can mate them — but the performance specification is different. For 800G and higher, MTP Elite is the standard.

8. Polish: UPC vs APC

  • UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Flat polish, blue color code. Acceptable for OM3/OM4 multi-mode. Return loss ≥ 50 dB.
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): 8° angled polish, green color code. Required for OS2 single-mode. Return loss ≥ 60 dB. Mandatory for 400G/800G OS2 applications.

Critical rule: Never mate UPC with APC. The angle mismatch causes severe back-reflection. Always check polish consistency across the link.

9. Jacket rating

  • LSZH (Low-Smoke Zero-Halogen): Default for European installations. Low toxicity in fire conditions.
  • OFNP (Plenum): Required for North American plenum air-handling space installations. CMP rated.
  • OFNR (Riser): Required for vertical riser shafts. CMR rated.
  • OFNG / Outdoor armored: For outdoor or harsh environment runs.

Building code dictates this — check with your facilities team before ordering.

A ready-to-send quote request template

Suppliers who get all 9 fields can quote within 4 hours. Suppliers who get half can quote in 2-3 days. The math is obvious.

⚠️ The 5 mistakes we see most

  • Specifying length as “about 5 m” or “5 meters.” Always specify exact length with tolerance.
  • Forgetting per-end connector gender. Trunks are not symmetric in many deployments.
  • Mixing UPC and APC in the same link. Always verify polish consistency.
  • Ordering MPO-12 when the optic needs MPO-16 (or vice versa). Always confirm the optic SKU first.
  • Skipping the polarity field entirely and assuming “default.” Suppliers default to different polarities. Always state it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an MPO trunk custom order take?

Standard configurations (Type B, OS2, MPO-12, UPC/APC, LSZH) in standard lengths ship from stock in 3-5 business days. Custom lengths or polarities ship in 1-2 weeks. Project quantities (50+ units) with full custom specs ship in 2-3 weeks. We confirm the timeline with every quote.

Do you need a 3D interferometer test report for every trunk?

For premium deployments (AI data center, hyperscale, financial trading), yes — request a 3D interferometer test report with each shipment to validate end-face geometry. For standard enterprise deployments, an automated optical loss test is usually sufficient and is included free with ABPTEL shipments.

What MOQ does ABPTEL apply to custom MPO trunks?

Single units welcome for evaluation. Production MOQs are typically 10-25 units per spec depending on connector and length. We discuss MOQ in the initial quote and bundle multiple specs in a single PO when possible.

Can I get an MPO trunk pre-tested at production for end-to-end loss?

Yes. Every ABPTEL trunk is tested at production with calibrated test equipment. Loss readings (insertion loss, return loss) for each fiber are documented in a per-cable test report that ships with the order at no extra cost.

Is there a difference between “MTP” and “MTP Elite”?

Yes. Standard MTP has insertion loss specification of ≤ 0.5 dB. MTP Elite is the low-loss variant with ≤ 0.35 dB. For 400G/800G data centers, MTP Elite is the recommended specification because the additional 0.15 dB of margin matters at high speeds.
